1 Finish Sketch and Create the Smokey Haze

After sketching, paint the smoke rising from her incense bowl using a no. 6 round and some Ultramarine Violet and Cerulean Blue. When this is dry, slightly soften the edges by brushing over the smoke with a soft ½-inch (12mm) flat and some clean water.

2 Lay In the Background Tones

Using a ½-inch (12mm) flat, paint a wash of Naples Yellow into the background. Avoid painting over the main column of smoke, but overlap some of the outer edges of the purple so that the colors blend into one another smoothly.

With a no. 4 round and Cadmium Orange, paint wet-into-wet to create a glow around the poppies in the lower areas. Trail the brush upward into hazy distant stalks of flowers that are out of focus, adding more depth to the piece.
